So many colors, fabrics, and competition grades. There are a lot of options. It’s not like karate where everyone wears the same white gi.

Whether you are a new white belt or an experienced black belt, if you train multiple days a week, you probably are going to want more than one gi. Also, collecting gis can be fun.

What to look for when choosing the best Bjj Gi.

Weight

This is probably the biggest factor when choosing a new gi. You want something durable but also breathable. It is a fine line to walk, and some gis will lean towards durable, and others toward breathable. When choosing a gi, it is all about personal preference.

Choosing the best BJJ gi also depends on how you roll. If you roll aggressively, leaning towards durability may be the best option. However, if you are a casual BJJ practicer, comfort and breathability might be a better choice.

Color

Unlike traditional karate, there are almost limitless color choices for BJJ gis. Personally, I like that there are so many color options. It gives you an opportunity to be different and have some style while rolling. (Even if you are a white belt without any style in your rolling).

Make sure that you ask around for the gym requirements if you are new to BJJ. Some gyms have specific “uniform” requirements. So before you go out and buy a new gi, make sure that you can train in it. Some competitions will also limit the color of gi. So if you are competing, make sure you know the gi requirements.

My Take

I got into BJJ because of Jocko, so it was only fair that I get his gi to start out. And I was instantly spoiled. It is hard to roll in anything else after rolling in an Origin gi.

One of the coolest things about Origin gis is that they are 100% made in America. They are the only gi company that makes 100% of their gi in America. From the cotton weave to final product.

I have yet to roll in a gi that I like more than my Origin. It is lightweight and incredibly durable. I have rolled in it a couple hundred times and still no rips or tears. The only thing I can compare it to is rolling in pajamas. It is that comfy.

My only two things that I am not a huge fan of is the waist belt, and how baggy the pants are around my ankle. I am not a big guy (A2) and so the pants are a little too baggy which makes them really easy to grip and hold onto while rolling.

My Take

Fuji Gis have been around for a long time. Starting back in 1969 with Judo kimonos, Fuji has been in the BJJ scene almost as long as Rickson Gracie.

Fuji gis have a very minimalistic design to them. Most of their gis have a few embroidered logos, but other than that do not have a whole lot of designs.

Fuji gis are a little on the heavy side. Even their lightweight gi is heavier than some of the other lightweight options out there. However, this does not mean that it isn’t comfy.

My Take

Go into any gym and you’ll see a handful of Sanabul gis. This is because they are the best bang for your buck gi out there. Not very often can you get a gi for under $70 and be confident that it is going to last.

This is by far the best kids gi out there. Starting at $45, it is everything you need in a kids gi.

The only downside about getting a Sanabul Essentials Gi is that they are not IBJJF certified. So if you are going to be competing in an IBJJF tournament you may need to pay a little more for a certified gi.

My Take

Shoyoroll is a bit more of a fashion gi choice. They pioneered the wave of colorful gi options with creative patches. Not only that, but they follow the limited release business model.

This means that Shoyoroll gis are made in a limited quantity. This gives you the option of having a semi-unique gi, that will help you stand out in the gym.

In addition to their great designs, the construction of the gi was made for the BJJ community. Their gis are durable and well constructed have fitted cuts.

My Take

The design of these gis focus on minimalistic designs with different color stitching. The result is great looking gis with distinct look. My personal opinion, the design of the the Hyperfly gis is my favorite.

The biggest problem with Hyperfly is the inventory. I am an A2, which is a pretty common size, so I have a difficult time finding available gis in the better designs.

If you are looking for a lightweight competition grade gi, the Hyperlyte collection is one of the lightest gi options available. It is so light that I have heard people say that it feels too lightweight.

My Take

Kingz is worn by some of the best in the world. If you go to the Kingz website you will see that the models wearing their rash guards and gis are all world champions and ADCC competitors.

Kingz is based out of San Diego, and has grown in popularity with both national and regional competitors because of their quality.

Even though these gis are being worn by top competitors, the price tag is not overly expensive. It definitely isn’t a budget gi, but you are getting a world championship level gi at a relatively low price.

My Take

Let’s be real, gis never stay closed while rolling. And nothing is cooler than your gi falling open mid-roll and someone just sees a tiger. Talk about intimidation factor.

But in all honesty, printed gi interiors are becoming a bigger and bigger trend in the JiuJitsu community and War Tribe Gear has some of the best designs.

The printed gi inside will fade over time, but it is still a great way to have a flashy gi.

War Tribe has great customer service and responds quickly to customers; however, a lot of their best designs sell out quick. So you have to be looking frequently for restocks.
